Caleb’s Journal Entry #14:
I’ve missed fishing. Lately, Elliot has taken over the fishing duties (mainly to get himself out of the house and away from the rest of us, but I can’t even be mad since he’s bringing home food…), but all the kids were at the Development Center and Marie was at work, so I had some extra time on my hands. So I grabbed my dusty pole and headed to the stream behind our bunker.
Fishing is nice and relaxing. Which is something that my life has been lacking for the past few months. Reuben has been making almost weekly visits to the bunker to take notes on Elliot before his 21st birthday. Just the sight of his face is enough to send me into panic mode lately. So the fact that I can get away from that for a little bit by fishing… it’s a lifesaver!
Adam, who’s seen what actually goes on when you’re about to test out of the DC, has thrown himself into his DC work. I’m pretty sure he’s trying to impress Reuben and show that he’s a quality candidate for the government. I could imagine nothing worse than for one of my children to join the government. Especially if it would turn him into someone like Jonas or Reuben. I just don’t see Adam as a government worker. And I hope that Reuben doesn’t see him as one either. But for now, I’ll just let Adam work hard on his project and keep my silence.
I mean, it’s not like Adam and Reuben actually talk. Reuben is too busy observing Elliot that he can’t have time to talk to Adam about his unrealistic goals. So I don’t think I have anything to really worry about on that front right now. I’ll probably have to keep an eye on him when he gets closer to his test out date.
Marie has really become the pride of the household! She’s been working so hard on completing the town library, that she rarely has time for get a good night’s sleep. On more than one occasion, I’ve found her with her head laying on her keyboard and taking a quick nap, only to jerk herself awake and get right back to work on her current book. She’s almost at the end, I can feel it! It’s been nice to take a step back and just support Marie while she works really hard on her books. But I can’t wait until I get to really work on my career too.
It seems to me that the mob has been increasing their activity around us lately. I don’t know exactly why, but I have a feeling that it’s got something to do with Elliot’s impending birthday and test. I have a suspicion that they, like Reuben, are also scouting out Elliot. I could be wrong and I could be just reading too much into it, but I honestly don’t think I am. I asked Marie if she remembered if the mob did the same thing when her and her brothers were approaching their tests. Unfortunately, since it was so long ago, she doesn’t remember. I guess I’ll have to put it out of my mind for now. I have other important things to worry about at the moment.
For example, Elliot’s big test is tomorrow, and Marie and I promised to help him study so I think I need to end this entry. Wish him luck! And hopefully he’ll be selected for a respectable career and not run off and join the mob…
